Frank Sinatra on Christian Faith

Story

Frank Sinatra had many friends in the Mafia. Frank was once spotted kissing the ring of hit man Sonny Franzese in an act of respect. Sinatra was grateful to Sonny because the mobster had done him favours. Frank Sinatra Junior was playing at the San Su San nightclub in New York; the paying punters were thin on the ground and Frank Jr was bombing. Famous dad telephoned Sonny and explained the problem. The next night and for many weeks, the nightclub was packed with hit men, bookmakers, loan sharks and prostitutes. They cheered loudly for Frank Jr and his singing career really took off. The famous crooner was deeply grateful to Sonny Franzese. You might be surprised to learn that Frank Sinatra believed in God!

Background Notes

Frank Sinatra was interviewed by the infamous Playboy magazine and he was asked if he believed in God. This was his answer:

"I think I can sum up my religious feelings in a couple of paragraphs. First: I believe in you and me.....I believe in nature, in the birds, the sea, the sky, in everything I can see or that there is real evidence for. If these things are what you mean by God, then I believe in God. But I don't believe in a personal God to whom I look for comfort or for a natural on the next roll of the dice. I'm not unmindful of man's seeming need for faith; I'm for anything that gets you through the night, be it prayer, tranquilizers or a bottle of Jack Daniel's.......Well, I believe that God knows what each of us wants and needs. It's not necessary for us to make it to church on Sunday to reach Him. You can find Him anyplace. And if that sounds heretical, my source is pretty good: Matthew, Five to Seven, The Sermon on the Mount."

Frank Sinatra was not an atheist but he didn't believe in Jesus as Lord and Saviour. His comments about 'religion' are pantheist. God is not a person at all because God is the same as nature. We should add that this impersonal god does not expect you to pray or to repent of your sins. After all this deity is in everything, both Mother Theresa and brutal hit man Sonny Franzese.

Four Ways of Looking at the Story

Materialist faith: "We believe that Frank was misguided because everything is just matter in motion.

Relativist faith: "We believe that Frank was being true to himself. He picked a faith that worked for him."

Pantheist faith: "We believe that there are sparks of the divine in everything. No need to pray, repent or confess your sins. Relax and sip Jack Daniel's with a Mafia pal.

Christian faith: "We believe that God is revealed in Jesus Christ. Sonny must repent and stop killing people. If he does that, the Holy Spirit will come and live in him."

Questions

1) Did Frank Sinatra have a convenient faith?

2) Is this a dangerous faith?

3) What is the difference between pantheist and Christian faith?

Frank Sinatra was never born-again. He was an agnostic, like so many millions of non-believers. God was not central in his life. Booze was, and money. He did not believe Jesus was/is God. Welcome to hell, Frank!! He's 'singing' in the 'heavenly choir?' Are you kidding me??

I read a long time ago that for social acceptance back in the day that in order to function in society atheists would call themselves Catholic. Many who have no true relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ call themselves Catholic even today.

Maybe Frank Sinatra should have included John 3, Nicodemus' conversation with Jesus at NIGHT about achieving Eternal Life, and HOW to do it! Nicodemus was a Jewish Rabbi, was a wimp, because he did not want to be seen with Christ. A very PERSONAL God! My 'spiritual' insight into Frank Sinatra is that he's in a warm place! VERY WARM!

I am watching a series about Frank Sinatra on Netflix. I noticed that his entire life took a downward tumble when he started to commit ADULTERY on his wife with Ava Gardner...He lived big and chose to walk down dark roads that only lead him to destruction ( Excessive drinking, sex with different women, drugs, cussing , hanging out with the MOB) ....In this life we can either do it Gods way ( live for the Spirit ) or do it our way (Live for the flesh )...Frank Sinatra lived only to please himself and not to please God. What a talent God gave him and he chose to repay God by doing all that in WRONG in life..NOTHING GOOD COMES OUT OF SIN.. We are free to choose our actions, . . . but we are not free to choose the consequences of these actions. I can only pray that he truly found God in the last days of his life and asked him for forgiveness. Life is so precious...Life goes by so fast and there is not one day where God is not looking down from heaven to see how you lived. We all are precious to God and we all should be living our short lives here on earth to please him , to glorify him, because in the end he is the only one that can save us from HELL and if we choose not to follow and obey him in our lives here on earth, we will not be going with him at the end. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. – Proverbs 9:10

He went to daily mass later on in life. His views changed with age. He was on medication for depression and sexual sins are part of depression. One of his parents hails from the same small town in Sicily as mobster Lucky Luciano.
I believe he repented later on in life, who knows for sure.

I'm Holy Spirit baptised and it never ceases to amaze me how judgmental evangelicals can be. Have you not read Judge you not or you shall be judged and Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; ... First, remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother's eye. What does this mean? It means strive to see your fellow men and women as made in the image and likeness of God and hold to that fact and you will do more to eradicate sin than critcizing another man's life. Besides how can you be so sure your life is so much better than Frank Sinatra who raised millions for charity, gave money away to those who needed it and paid off people's hospital bills. How do you know if you were living his life, came from the same background, had the same DNA and the same upbringing, you would do any better? Sinatra, probably influenced by his mother, helped many, many causes. Helped the Jews create Israel and was an advocate for blacks and equal rights long before anyone else seemed to care, refusing to sing in Las Vegas unless the black musicians had equal treatment.

He's also the world's greatest entertainer and clearly his life was led in the fast lane with many opportunities and temptations coming his way. He wasa maybe too close to the criminal underworld and there were too many women but he did at sometime later in life take his faith very seriously, attending mass regularly and was close to various senior catholic clergy who must have been advising him on religious matters.

Maybe the greatest love you can give someone is unconditional which requires seeing them in the image and likeness of God.

Christians cannot earn salvation it's a gift from God and Jesus died on the cross so we could be forgiven our sins, so that though our sins are scarlet they may become whiter than snow.

Beware your criticisms of others. Both King David and Moses had blood on their hands, through battle and murder and yet they remained favourites of God. King David stole Bathsheba from her husband and deliberately sent him to the frontline so he would die in battle and yet King David remains a favourite if God.

I think St. Paul says somewhere in Romans that however holy we try to be and whatever we do to win God's favour in the end God still has the choice whether you are acceptable or not!

.....and all I can say is Thank God for Jesus!

Yes, evangelicals can be very judgmental but on the flip side don’t try and justify that Frank was justified in the eyes of God because he gave millions to charity or that he was kind to minorities and Jews. If he rejected Christ as his savior, he is not in Heaven. That’s what God’s word says . Good works will not get you into Heaven. Bottom line is only God knew if he really called on Christ in his last moments of life and I do not mean “last rites” Roman Catholicism is a false religion and has nothing to do with the true Gospels.

To James T

Nowhere did I jusify that but do not discount giving away money or charity as irrelevant in the eyes of God.

Ah heresies! It never ceases to amaze me how many people fall for the claim that such and such a religion is false but fail to do their own rrsearch into it.

Right wing Evangelicals have made all sorts of prophecies over the years, none of which have come true and yet blindly people carry on following these leaders.

Whichever, religion you belong to has its fair share of evil monsters! Those who claim they what is heresy and what is not and who are prepared to kill, maim, torture and burn those who do not belong to the right 'tribe'.

As for Frank, he seemed like a reasonably ordinary guy to me with a magnificent talent and larger than life persona that must have been hard to live up to but brought him fame and fortune.

Never assume you know who should be judged and how!
